This Year's show, Fiddler On the Roof! March 26th-30th 2008

Fiddler On the Roof was the Greely Player's first production, back in 1990, (featuring such Greely luminaries as Al Page, and most or  all? of the Stanley/Villeneuve family!!). This year we reprise this show as our 19th annual production.

In early 20th century Russia, Tevye, a poor Jewish dairyman, lives with his wife Golde and five daughters in the small village of Anatevka.  As he attempts to eke out a living and abide by the normal Jewish traditions, he looks to the matchmaker Yente to find husbands for his eldest three daughters, Tzeital, Hodel and Chava.  In a break with tradition, one by one his daughters request to be allowed to marry the men that they love rather than the ones that are chosen for them.  Meanwhile the Russians are instigating terrible pogroms against the Jewish people of Russia and the Jews of Anatevka are touched by these events.  In the end, they are forced to leave their village and Tevye is determined to start a better life in a new land.

The play's name stems from a painting by Marc Chagall, one of many surreal paintings he created of Eastern European Jewish life. The Fiddler is a metaphor of survival through tradition and joyfulness.  Tevye tells the audience about the customs of his people and about how they have lived all their lives in Anatevka. He equates life in Anatevka with being a "fiddler on a roof": trying to scratch out a simple, pleasant tune without breaking his neck.

Fiddler On The Roof is regarded as one of the most famous stage and film musicals.  It opened on Broadway in September 1964 with music by Jerry Brock, lyrics by Sheldon Harnick and libretto by Joseph Stein.  In 1971, Norman Jewison created the successful film adaptation. The story is based on Tevye and his Daughters, or Tevye the Milkman by the Russian Jewish author Sholom Aleichem, originally published in 1949.

This year's production team for Fiddler On The Roof will be led by Anne Peterson as Producer, Jane Brownrigg as Artistic Director, John Pohran as Musical Director, and Kerrie Whitehurst as Vocal Director.
