Reviewing the Oliver! Situation...

For the second time in our 16-year history, The Greely Players mounted this very popular musical. I would have to say that the second Oliver cast enjoyed themselves as much as the "first -timers" 10 years ago.

We had a wonderful group of young and young-at-heart cast members. We also were extremely pleased to welcome newcomers Jane Brownrigg as Director, and Janet Preuter as rehearsal pianist for the show. We'd welcome them back anytime!

We also were blessed with the return of Music Director John Pohran and his very talented group of Canterbury High School musicians; Vocal Director Kerrie Whitehurst; Set designer Don Creelman; Costume Mistress Judy Taylor, Lise Page as head of Make -up and Leslie Fournier with April Leatham for Hair.

Other welcome newbees were Elaine Trembley and Kim Olsen on Props, and Gina André on Make-up. There were also a whole host of backstage helpers whose assistance was crucial to the success of the show.

Parents of the young cast members were very complimentary about the participation of their children in production and the wonderful experience that they had as cast members. I think the adults had a good time too….how could they not with a drinking scene?!

I was very pleased with the whole production this year, and was gratified to see that most expense items came in under budget. At the same time, our ticket sales (including VIP extras) amounted to $19,600; surpassing The Music Man by $2,200. Our profit on the show meant that we could offer 4 bursaries to deserving students.

Just as important and less quantifiable, is what the audience was able to experience. If the approximately 1,700 people who attended the show walked out of the hall smiling and humming the tunes, then we did our jobs well. Thank you to everyone who helped make my job easy.

Do You Have Good Stuff……

... that you'd like to get rid of and help finance the proposed new concert hall at the same time? Julian Armour and former Greely Players Director Patsy Royer recently outlined the plans for the new Elgin Street Concert Hall to a meeting of the Ottawa Community Theatres Organisation and explained the on-line auction to be launched June 1 to help raise some of the funds required. Donations to the auction will each be featured on their own dedicated web page with active links set by the donor. The auction will run until mid-November 2005 and part of the proceeds will return to the donor. They are actively seeking donations and support from the Ottawa arts community. Further details can be found by contacting Patsy Royer through: auction2@chamberfest.com

And The Winners Are……………

Since its first show in 1990, "Fiddler on the Roof", The Greely Players has grown in capability and reputation. Much of that success is attributable to local support. Recognizing this, in the late 1990s the Executive decided to return something to the community in the form of financial support (bursaries) for local young people going into post secondary arts programs. Each year so far, we have given at least two awards annually, usually of $500 each, to applicants from the local area and/or past and present members of the Greely Players. Check the Bursaries page for more details.

This year, due to the financial success of "Oliver!", the executive were able to provide four bursaries. The winners were:

Above (left to right): Sarah-Mae Pyndus, Leah Cogan, Greely Players President Marg Van Dusen, Stephanie Geary and Ian Quane

Leah Cogan:

Leah was in the cast of "Anne of Green Gables" and took a lead role in "Bye, Bye, Birdie". She has been active in the local theatre and musical community. Leah will be taking a course in Musical Theatre at Sheridan College.

Stephanie Geary:

Stephanie has performed in the orchestra for the Greely Players since 2003. She has been active and successful in her music endeavours both at Canterbury and at external competitions. She has been accepted for a Bachelor of Music in Performance at the University of Toronto.

Sarah Mae Pyndus:

Sarah-Mae has participated in the Greely Players' orchestra, as a trombonist, on four separate occasions since 2001. She has had extensive experience with Canterbury and other music groups, as well as significant success at the Kiwanis' music festival and has been accepted at the University of Western Ontario for a Bachelor of Music course.

Ian Quane:

Ian has played viola and violin in the Greely Players' orchestra for the past four seasons. Apart from extensive participation in Canterbury music groups, Ian has played with The Cadenza String Quartet, which is active in the Ottawa area, and with the Ottawa Youth Orchestra Academy. He has been accepted for the music program at the University of Western Ontario.

We wish all the winners and all the young members of our group the very best for their future endeavours.
