| In early 20th century Russia, Tevye, a poor Jewish dairyman, lives with his wife Golde and five daughters in the small village of Anatevka. As he attempts to eke out a living and abide by the normal Jewish traditions, he looks to the matchmaker Yente to find husbands for his eldest three daughters, Tzeital, Hodel and Chava. In a break with tradition, one by one his daughters request to be allowed to marry the men that they love rather than the ones that are chosen for them. Meanwhile the Russians are instigating terrible pogroms against the Jewish people of Russia and the Jews of Anatevka are touched by these events. In the end, they are forced to leave their village and Tevye is determined to start a better life in a new land. |
